Blind Backup Protocol
Example of the ‘Essential’ setup:
Your bitcoin stays under your exclusive control at all times. You hold the only key needed to spend in a primary single-signature setup that's always active. This is self-custody.
As a backup, a recovery path is set up using three keys together (3-of-3 multi-sig): your backup key, and two keys held by Bitcoin Safeguard. This recovery path only becomes spendable after 12 months of inactivity (this can be anywhere between 1 and 12 months). This a timelock built directly into the Bitcoin protocol. With every transaction you do, this timelock automatically refreshes.
Crucially, your backup key is constructed from two components: a seed phrase (stored by both you and Bitcoin Safeguard) and a passphrase (that only you and your beneficiaries know). Bitcoin Safeguard never has access to your passphrase and without it, the recovery path cannot be used. Neither Bitcoin Safeguard nor anyone else can ever move your bitcoin without you or your beneficiaries.
What if you lose your passphrase? Bitcoin Safeguard stores a personal question to which your passphrase is the answer. This way, we together make sure that you never lose access to you bitcoin.
